This is part of a complete kitchen renovation in our first house using IKEA cabinets and butcher block counter tops. The kitchen was from the 1980’s and had original “custom” builder cabinets.
Today I want to share a quick DIY for creating your very own cottage style kitchen by incorporating a bead board backsplash.
For this project you will need:
- Appropriate amount of primed bead board paneling for your square footage
- No More nails liquid adhesive
- Skill Saw (you could also have your pieces pre-cut at the hardware store if you do not own a saw}
- High Gloss Paint
- Silicone
- Wood Trim for corners, edges, and where the bead board meets the counter top
Be sure your area is prepped, clean and ready to go. We removed our 30yr old tile backsplash because we relocated cabinets. However, my mom did a bead board backsplash over her existing tile backsplash. I have also heard of people hot gluing their paneling to the tile, but I am not sure how well this would hold up over time.
The Steps: 1,2, cha cha cha
- Measure and cut your primed beadboard.
- Paint 2 coats of high gloss paint in color of choice. High gloss allows for a wipeable, durable surface.
- Connect pieces using tongue and groove.
- Apply NO More Nails liquid adhesive to backing and firmly press against the wall.
- Silicone any gaps or seams and finish with trim pieces where desired.
This is a relatively quick project, and adds a cozy element to the kitchen.

Ash! Those oak counter-tops are BEAUTIFUL! Also, I do like the colored bead-board. The white is certainly very clean, but those muted spa tones like those in your sample photo also add a calm, serene effect
I am voting white. I think because you are planning to sell…and I love the contrast of white with the countertops. That’s my opinion.:)

Thanks ladies for your input 🙂 I think we will stay with white for now, because we are planning to sell in the near future… perhaps it might be color for the next kitchen! Pictures coming this week 🙂
I LOVE IT! I am also in the process of kitchen reno and installing bead board back splash! I have thought about using volor, but keep coming back to white. I am using cobalt blue (dishes behind glass) and small touches of red to add color. I made a small kitchen island, painting an old iron treadle sewing machine base RED , raising it a few inches and topping it with walnut-stained aspen wood. Leaving your bead board white gives you so many more options! Thank you for sharing your kitchen reno process!

this was from home depot in the lumber section
