Door Dilemmas

I am sitting in the kitchen, water colors strewn across the table, and new Mumford and Sons playing in the background (get it.) with a little hammering out the door to compliment it. We are 4 days into construction of our addition, and I may need someone to pinch me! The foundation is poured, and they are working on waterproofing and weeping tile. yay! You might have followed along on IG, but here are a few shots just in case!

Our backyard is a bit of a scary mess- but the boys are sure loving those dirt piles! Oye! I am accepting that my floors will be dirty no matter what I do… hopefully just for a bit.

As exciting as our addition is (!!!!!!!YAY!!!!!!) This post is not actually about that. It is about our new front door! Well, our soon to be front door. We really needed a new door, because the existing one is just going to offer nothing for winter warmth… So, of course, I really wanted a  craftsman style door… or similar, with a window. I did not want to get a steel door. While we did have one on our old house, it was a side entry, and a 1980’s style home… it was a big improvement from the previous door, and it was free. A win all around. For this house though, I wanted something that would speak to passers by of the charming little cottage that is our home! (at least in my imagination!) So, I wanted something that was old, or looked old. But, despite my wants, they didn’t match up with my budget- a basic unfinished Craftsman stlye Fibreglass door came in at $800…. ouch. So, I decided I would frequent habitat, lumber discard doors, and kijiji. But, I wasn’t having any luck.

And then, my good friend told me about a special at a certain big box hardware store… for $199! And So, I went with knots in my tummy, and was met with utter joy when it was just what I was looking for- for a great price! Fibreglass, ready to be painted with a sweet little window. So now, the dilemma.

I don’t know what color to paint it! I want to do our house in blue siding, white trim. Our back screen door, which is not visible from the front, is yellow. Which I like.

Originally I though green… and then I was thinking yellow? And then I though maybe black… or grey? I really don’t know! Here are a few options from my board on Pinterest- Which one do you like?

Many options! The last one almost makes me want to do our house in grey… because that blue would never work with blue… almost.

So, what are your thoughts? Which one do you like best? Help!

  1. Hard question!
I wish i knew the colour you wanted to paint the house. So i’ll say either yellow (to match other), that darker turquoise looked pretty, or gee even white looked good (and you could dress it up with all sorts of wreaths, numbers, nests ahah)

    1. Thanks Christy! I want to paint the house a deep blue… not navy, but not light blue… somewhere in between, with white trim and Cedar Shakes as accents on top… I am starting to lean toward yellow but afraid of the bold!

    2. yeah..white is classic and bright…and maybe adding a little turquiose will fill the need for something more unique but that you won’t get sick of..:) hi christy!

  2. So many Great choices! I really like this one:

I feel like its an in between of the white and the bright turquiose…at first, my eye went straight for the neon yellow, but I think it might look like a richer fuller look with the subtle white turq. and that might brighten the blue home…

otherwise…go with your gut and do something bold and dangerous and go for the neon yellow or orange:)

    some of my thoughts…

    1. Mo! I love you, and your input!! I think I feel the same about the yellow… I think I would like it for a short time, but ultimately it is a bit to wild for me for the long term 😉 I LOVE the turquoise, but, I think it would clash with our house color… so, I might have to find ways to still use it inside. I’m thinking our bedroom door might be a good place to do that… I’m still a bit undecided about the color, so I might even leave it white until we redo our siding in the spring, and then I can get a better feel for what it will look like…

    1. or…the one in the center of the doors above that is bright light turq……(ok, i promise im done now;) no pressure….!

i’ve just been looking at so many paint hues of white because my parents are painting a big room thats being added to the back of their home too..so my mind is hooked on color these days:)
