Using Reclaimed Wood in The Home

I love wood. It brings texture to a space, and can be a beautiful focal point. We have used wood quite a bit throughout our home, but often times in new builds there is not much wood incorporated into a space outside of cabinetry or flooring. Wood can be very expensive-much of the trim, moulding, and details in a home that may have been wood in the past are often MDF, painted out in white. I personally really like white trim, but there is something so timeless about beautiful wood!

If you live in an old home, especially from the 80’s- you may find yourself surrounded by yellow oak! Our first house was like that, and the doors and trim made the whole house feel dated. In that case, I would suggest painting it out… it really does feel so much fresher!

Today I wanted to talk about ways to use reclaimed wood. Reclaimed, salvaged… it essentially means old wood that was pulled off our out of a building. Using reclaimed wood doesn’t have to be expensive, and the wood itself may not cost you anything… it doesn’t hurt to ask about a dilapidated out building, or some pallets… it might be just what you need to create a fun feature in your home!

palette wall oneLast week I shared our pallet wall, and we have also used reclaimed wood for our fireplace mantle. We essentially made a box, to give the look of a beam. It is wood that came off of an old farm out building, we cleaned it up and I gave it a light sanding to reveal some of the texture. {don’t mind the unfinished stone work and Christmas decor ;)}

fireplae 3fireplace3 We also used reclaimed wood from the same batch throughout our Studio, especially as trim around the doors and windows. I need to get over there one day to snap some shots, because the guys were able to do some really neat things in the space. {pun intended?} On the note of the Space, we are working with insurance to make repairs and replace our equipment. Thank you again for your offers to help and words of encouragement! It means a lot.

Today I thought I would share some fun photos I came across, in case you would like to incorporate some reclaimed wood into your home 🙂 I also have some more inspiration on a Pinterest Board I created.

The herringbone pattern is such a fun application 🙂

I’ve always loved this little room by Layla of the Lettered Cottage. That is actually a salvage gym floor on the walls {if my memory serves me correctly}

The original part of our house has quite a bit of shiplap {similar to what is pictured in the above photo} we are using some of it in our mud room/hall area, but I plan on painting it out because some of it is in awful shape!

This vertical application is also fun!

From a full wall to just a headboard, there are lots of ways to use reclaimed wood. I’d love to see any projects you’ve done using reclaimed or salvaged wood 🙂

Happy Monday! I’m hoping for things to settle this week after lots of visitors the last month… the kids and I are ready to find our routine, and the snow is starting to melt. I can’t wait for spring!!
