Theft, Calling, and the Value of Life

" The thief comes only to steal, kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it
to the full."
John 10:10

On Thursday morning I received a text from my hubby that our studio The Space had been broken into. As he began to asses the physical damage, time would tell what all had been stolen.

I really struggle with vandalism and theft. It is something I have always hated, and not understood. I found myself, Thursday morning, in a place of defeat. Everything we had worked so hard to build both literally and physically, appeared to be snatched in an instant. And I found myself wondering what it was that brought these thieves to this point. What desperation had they reached… yes, we feel violated, discouraged and as though things are in a state of chaos. Yet, I also feel God’s presence so thick, and know that this is a small thing in the grand scheme of life. Those loved and dear to us are safe. The people that took from us have more people praying for them then perhaps any time in their lives.

I was reminded instantly of the story Les Miserables. The candle sticks, the second chance at life. How can we live open handedly with what has been given to us, not fearing when it is lost or taken. God has walked with us, is teaching us, and humbling us. He has a greater plan, even amidst the wrongs in life.

The timing for us feels personal. We have many things coming to a head, but Thursday marked the last day of a 2 week pre-production planning session with the 5 producers of our film project She Has a Name. A story that focuses on the plight so many face: being forced to live a life of sexual slavery, constant exploitation, and hopelessness. The physical time the producers shared not only brought clarity, and distribution ideas- but most importantly, very tangible plans to use the film to effect the state of men, women and children facing modern day slavery all over the world. We have personally been involved in this fight for several years, but this film will allow the greatest impact to date that we feel moved to see through.

This break in felt discouraging. To essentially have nearly all of our gear snatched, putting Matt and Dan {the two film makers} at a stopping point for planning, working, and supporting their families.

The thing is, we know a good God. If anything, this moment has solidified for us that we are on the right course, though it seems to be more difficult then we have imagined. Pursuing your calling is not an easy road, and to be honest Matt and I often find ourselves switching back and forth in the role of doubter and encourager. More then anything, our desire is to see every heart encounter true life. We want to see an end to lives being stolen away.

Camera and lenses are just things… they really don’t mean much. But a life can never be replaced.

I would ask for you prayers in the days, weeks, and months ahead. Thank you to all of you that have encouraged us the last few days. We love you and feel your love.

  1. We are so broken for you guys… don’t even know what to say…but I don’t want to say nothing. You guys are on our hearts. I wish there was more we could do!

    1. Thanks Jami. We are kind of at a loss too… but just moving forward! Not really any way to prepare for these things.
