Upcycled Scarf Pillow

Today I am going to share with you a DIY for a simple upcycle project. I used a scarf and old pillow, to create a personalized cozey throw pillow for our room. Super easy! If you would like to try one yourself, you will need:

  • scarf (at least 10inches wide)
  • sewing machine, and thread
  • insert, or old pillow
  • stencil
  • craft paint

This is what I started with:

The first step consisted of cutting the tassels off and sewing the top and bottom closed (I just folded my scarf in half and cut it to the desired length):

I used an old down pillow from my grandma that had seen better days… I sewed 2 columns down the middle after squishing the feathers toward the outside, and cut in the middle. This minimized the feather fluff, and left me with 2 inserts.

Once your pillow is stuffed, it is time to sew up the end! At this point, I had not planned to stencil, but decided to add the word “SEA” after staring at my pillow for a few minutes days. I would recommend stenciling before stuffing your insert, but it doesn’t really matter that much.

You can use an adhesive stencil, make your own, or use painters tape like me! I tell ya, these $1 stencils were a good investment…

I went back and forth between red and black, but chose red in the end. Be sure to DAB or blot as some would say, and don’t have your (sponge) brush too wet with paint, otherwise your letters will bleed.

Once you are happy with the color transfer, it’s time to remove your stencil.

And there you have an upcycled scarf pillow! One day it might grace a chair at our cottage home…

But for now it will usher me into sweet dreams of days by the sea.

If this little turkey will let me keep my eyes closed long enough to actually catch some zzzz’s… 😉
