Painting the Wood Planked Ceiling in Our Kitchen

It has begun! We are painting the wood planked ceiling in our kitchen… and while we are still at the first coat of primer phase (home (s) aren’t built in a day!) it is so much brighter already!! It’s getting closer and closer to finished…. yay!

We’re using a roller and a brush- which works well in terms of not overly disrupting life- since our kitchen gets a ton of daily traffic, and the kids do school around the dining room table 5 days a week! In many regards draping and taping everything off, then spraying- would be quicker. But- we don’t own a sprayer- and right now we are just steeling a bit of time here and there to get this done!

There’s still trim and the finished coats to do, but you can see how much brighter it feels already!

I’ve been on a big purge and clean mission the last few months, and I have really been assessing what we need in our dining area. Last month I sold our 6 dining chairs as well as the primitive style hutch I had refinished a while back. As per the Nester’s advice I am “quieting” the room.

Getting the wood dining chairs out made me realize how loud they had been… and while the room still feels a bit “off” it is making much more sense. That is what led me to paint the ceiling. I don’t want to make any major choices on furniture or paint, until that pine is gone. They were a big part of throwing off the room…

There is something else that has been bothering me in the kitchen, but I didn’t want to admit it 😉 I want to be content- and I wish I always made the right choice the first time- but that’s just not the case!

The range hood isn’t working for me (!) and I finally got Matt’s ok to make a change… When we built that range hood we had planned to have stone counter tops- but we ended up going with butcher block for budget reasons. We also had open shelves at the time, and I could not have anticipated how massive these uppers would be that flank the stove…

If I had it to do again, I think I would have made the uppers narrower, and the hood a bit wider than the stove. I didn’t realize that IKEA boxes are 15″ deep (not 11 or 12) and these are 36″ boxes that finish at 37.5″ with their end gables. Live and learn! That is the DIY life.

I’m feeling inspired to reflect the top portion of our fireplace as a range hood- because I just love everything about it.

I’m feeling a bit of creative energy back after needing some rest. And it’s good friends. Painting the wood planked ceiling has me excited…

  1. If your dining room chairs are gone, what are you presently using?
Your kitchen is absolutely fabulous. I know you must be enjoying it very much.

    1. Hi Kim! Good question. I pulled down the two chairs from our loft that were at the games table- and brought 2 wicker chairs from our bedroom. Although we’ve been typically eating at the counter with the bar stools… Hoping to build a bench soon!

  2. hi mizzzzz ash
the white ceiling looks fantastic it really brightens everything nicely… I think making the range hood look like the fireplace top would work well…
your kitchen looks so bright, fresh and inviting, well done!💫
