Our Quaint Farmhouse Kitchen

Today I thought it was time to share our quaint farmhouse kitchen with you. Quaint is a fitting description for this kitchen… attractively unusual or old-fashioned. It’s certainly a bit unusual and definitely old fashioned. I’ll be honest that after coming from a newly renovated kitchen that was planned so well with a gas range and so much storage, this kitchen definitely leaves something to be desired. But, there’s a few things I can do to freshen it up a bit.

The cabinets are very orangey wood. Once we moved our DIY cabinet base into the kitchen it became apparent that they could benefit from a quick paint job. I’d like to address the lighting… and we are constantly thinking about how we could rework the layout (the fridge is in an awkward spot) but at this rate it is working ok. There isn’t enough storage for us within the kitchen, but we are making it work with a pantry cabinet on the wall opposite the kitchen.

I do love the stone walls. They are very charming. And while the wood is pretty…. I think I may end up painting it. It’s just so dark in here. We have had so many cloudy, rainy days this winter- and the wood seems to just suck up the little bit of light that we do get. I am thinking I will paint the ceiling, and leave the beams. A controversial decision for some, but it was my first instinct… and now that I have waited it out for several months, I still think it is the way to go.

Our plan is to do very inexpensive changes in here, a phase 1 if you will. We would love to do a kitchen reno one day… but it’s not on the horizon anytime soon. So, for the most part I will be using paint and accessories to give a fresh take. I painted the back of the island base very early on in a soft minty color… but that didn’t work with the soapstone color on the DIY cabinet base, so I went over it with white.

The dark color is not normally something I would choose, but I had it in my stash, and that’s why I went with it. I think it works well with the stone for the time being, and if I want to I can easily paint it with another color! You know me, I am no stranger to painting cabinets.

I don’t even want to talk about the elephant in the room. But I must.

I have school cafeteria flooring. lol. What else would you call it? Doesn’t it remind you of a school floor? It’s terrible… so can you say area rug? The rest of the house has lovely hardwood, but the main living area has this put down… it is the house of a working farm after all!

The dishwasher is not pretty, and it’s currently the first thing you see when you look at the kitchen, but there is no other spot for it, so I am playing with the idea of adding a skirt to it. Although I am not sure of the logistics, and I know if it’s cumbersome then it will get the boot. I’m thinking velcro might be the ticket…..

And while I love the added storage and counterspace from our DIY cabinet, I really don’t love the openness below. I don’t like seeing our clutter! So… I plan to most definitely add a skirt to the base of it.

It’s fun to share some of the process with you. As I mentioned, I have had a heck of a time taking photos in here- as it is just so dark! An issue I didn’t have in our last home. But, I know you are all fabulous and will bear with me as I sort it out.

Thanks for stopping by today,

xo

  1. What kind of paint did you use on your cupboard doors? And does the wood grain still show through the paint?

    1. Hi Barbara- this particular paint is called “Fusion Mineral Paint.” In terms of the wood grain showing, it really depends on the finish of the doors. If it is smooth than no, but on the cabinet base the legs were rough wood, and so I still see that graining and texture under the paint. Hope that helps!

  2. Let’s assume those tiles are linoleum and not vinyl. It’s an amazing, hard wearing eco material, and the color you have is very chic. It has a reputation for being used in industrial spaces because it was, but it’s also in a lot of very high end eco construction. I think your space is lovely and it’s refreshing to see something other than than bran new construction on the internet.

    1. What a kind note Anne. Thank you! I think you are right- these floors were definitely chosen because they can handle a lot of use! Especially with animals and weather. 🙂

  3. I absolutely love the character of your farmhouse kitchen! There is so much potential for beauty witcheck I’m sure you will bring out to the fullest!!! I love the idea of a skirt around the open cabinet. You could paint or stencil the floor, or make a floor cloth! They make some beautiful covers for the dishwasher too! Either magnetic or vinyl depending on your appliance. Heres the link to an Etsy shop that has some cute ones! https://www.etsy.com/listing/855814151/dishwasher-cover-vinyl-sticker content://com.android.chrome.
