Installing Butcher Block Counter Tops, Doors and a Farmhouse Sink! | ORC Week 5 Kitchen Update

This week has been a gooder! We very nearly have a fully functional kitchen, and got through the last of the hard stuff- like installing butcher block counters, installing the sink and faucet, and finishing all of the new rough ins. That means its time to close up the walls, and put the final touches on this kitchen! With one week to spare until reveal week for the One Room Challenge!

Here is this week’s video update!

Here are links to all of the posts about  week one, week two, week three and week four, just in case you are stopping by for the first time and would like to get caught up!

It feels less like a construction project and more like a room these days- which means we are moving in the right direction. Getting the counters and sink installed was actually quite a bit of work. First we had to get the peninsula level- which was no easy task in an old house with sloping floors. But Matt persevered- and we got all the cabinets in!

We decided to build a half wall so that everything was nice and secure, we could easily add electrical outlets, and the counter top would have additional support.

The Sink

We got the counter tops in at the end of a very long day- and then put the sink in place. We smeared the cut edge with boat loads of clear silicone, and use dowels and wood glue, as well as additional silicone at the seams.

The sink is the new apron front sink from Ikea, and it’s lovely. It doesn’t have the large lip on the back like the old one- which means you have to run countertops behind it. I think it looks great- but it’s not as DIY friendly as the old version. Which was fine for us- but just a heads up if you are wanting to put one in.

The Faucet

We chose a Pfister faucet in matte black- it pulls down and has an alternative spray option. Simple and sleek- kind of a modern farmhouse vibe. I hit a major wall Saturday night… or was it Friday night? I can’t remember- but I was exhausted, and went to bed early. Matt had to work late, and ended up coming home and installing the faucet. What a dream. Ta Da! Just like that we have a sink. You have no idea how beautiful a sink full of CLEAN dishes is! ha!

Finishing Touches

We put up all of the cabinets and doors, with the exception of the fridge cabinet. We ordered our appliances last Thursday- so I am realllllly hoping we get them soon! We went with a Fisher & Paykel counter depth fridge, and a Bosch dishwasher with a third rack- both in stainless.

We also put together stools for the peninsula, or I should say the kids did! They are simple and black, and 4 of them fit perfectly- so that is wonderful news for the 4 little people that will be using them most!

Tile and Hardware

I am trying to decide on an accent tile for behind the range. I haven’t been able to track down my inspiration tile- which I love. It’s a subtle, soft, yet deep shade of blue.

I did pick up a sample from a local store, and have been staring at it. It’s pretty but too light of a blue- and reads like a beach house vibe to me. What do you think? I also have subway tile (because we have it leftover from our shower) and some marble which is from our bar area. I think if I went with a marble I would do a rectangle- the hex is too small and busy to me. But I wonder if it will stain from splatters… so I might just continue the hunt for the perfect tile.  Maybe I’ll nix the blue all together and go with something more “neutral.”

Also our hardware arrived from Liberty Hardware! I can not wait to get everything installed. YAY!

The last piece of the puzzle is lighting- and I think I’ve made up my mind. We also decided to install tongue and groove around the sink wall- instead of tiling it. I am feeling good about the decision, and it makes me feel much better in terms of installing my open shelving! I always get nervous drilling into tile.

Until next week!

  1. It looks so beautiful already!

I agree about the blue tile though, too light and coastal like. I have alternating light cream and white tile in my kitchen and no issues with staining.

Good luck with wrapping everything up!!
