Inspiration for a Desk Area + Home Office

We have found ourselves in need of some desk space in our home, and so we are beginning to gather inspiration and materials to create a space for our kids to do their school work. Traditionally they have done work at the kitchen table, but I have 2 of our boys taking online courses this year, so they are often doing work at a computer.

We have a bit of a strange space off our kitchen/dining/living area, and it seemed like the perfect spot for a desk area. This summer we had planned to make it a “coffee bar” spot similar to what we had in our last house. (you can check that out here) but once school started up it became apparent that we needed a dedicated desk area. We hadn’t set up our family computer since the move, and I like to have it in a main living space.

Here area few ideas that are giving me inspiration.

I’m going to show you the area we are working with. Just keep in mind that this photo was taking in the evening after we had assembled and hung some upper cabinets on my cell phone. So it’s a wee bit dark and grainy. The counter top base will be going back to the kitchen. I never know what to call it! Matt and I put it together using some wood scraps and a counter top. It’s been very handy! The upper cabinets will be staying.

The wall is 8 feet long. I’m planning to keep the uppers and add doors. The wall is painted over wall paper so I’d like to do a wall treatment over it. I’d like to incorporate 2 workstations, and hopefully some kind of tower/drawers in the centre to store some of the kids school supplies, crafting items, and curriculum. We will also need to put the printer here as it is getting plenty of use these days.

I haven’t decided on a paint color yet. That will be fun to choose! We did purchase another butcher block counter from Ikea, and will use that as the desktop. If things go to plan this project will be a quick weekend update so that the kids can use it right away. I haven’t decided yet if I will be buying doors from Home Depot (these uppers are their in stock ready to assemble boxes) or if we will make our own. There are only 3 in stock options at our local store, and none of them really speak to me- but I definitely want to be able to simplify the view and keep the clutter behind closed doors.

Feels good to be working on a little indoor project. With all the work of animals and growing flowers through the summer, all while enjoying the beach and cheering our kids on in their sports, then with my “pregnancy sickness” we haven’t been doing much in the way of indoor projects. Time to put our stamp on this little farmhouse.
