Over the last year I have been trying to finish some of the lingering projects remaining in the living room that we added onto our tiny little 1940’s farmhouse. Things like paint touch ups, finishing the built ins and finally stream lining the design to better suit our family. It has felt disjointed, and I have rearranged the room a zillion times it seems. I’ve never had a design plan for this room, so it’s time to make one! The one thing I have decided on is the sofa.
No matter what I tried it has been an odd layout with too many chairs. I love the open space, and seeing through the large windows, but we just never seem to have enough seating, or at least not enough comfortable seating. So I started looking at sectional options, and selected the Gronlid Sofa from IKEA.
There are a few features about the sofa that drew us to it. The style of the back cushions feel a little bit contemporary, yet not too modern- it reminds me of some of the Pottery Barn Sofas I really like, without the price tag. The cover is removable, and washable- which is important with so many little humans in the house. Multiple slipcover options mean we can switch things up in the future if we want to- that is a fabulous feature in my opinion. And finally, it is modular- so the configuration can be changed or added to in the event we ever move etc.
I grabbed a few quick shots of it set up in the living room, looking very lived in and not staged at all 😉
I assembled the sofa myself, and it was pretty straightforward. Though I needed a little help to lift the sections onto the brackets that link them together. If you’ve assembled an IKEA sofa that might make sense to you. 2 people would definitely make quick work of it.
We decided to get rid of our large reclaimed wood coffee table as it was just too large (it’s now at Maker House) and bring the small chest I built back in here. I am currently on the hunt for a new, large rug. You might recall that I moved our jute rug under the kitchen table. I’ve temporarily borrowed our bedroom rug- just to see if I like the tone on tone, which I do. However I am also playing with the idea of a little bit of pattern and color in here, and the rug would be a great spot to do that. By color, I mean muted tones, nothing too crazy. Perhaps something with a vintage turkish rug vibe…
It’s fun to work on this room little by little! I have so many random decor and furniture pieces- and I am really making an effort to find a place for the things I love, and that serve our family- then letting go of the things that don’t!

mizzzz Ash the room looks absolutely stunning and the sofa is gorgeous iit suits that space so well… I must say you are brave going with white, I have thought about it many times but I have still not done it…🥰✨💚
Thank you Mizz D, we love it so far! I feel like it’s pretty safe since we can always go darker if we really need to, yay Ikea! 🙂 I definitely would not have gone white otherwise….
The sofa is nice but im in love with your chest (coffee table) You said you made it yourself. Do you have any instructions ?
Thank you Judy! I do not have any instructions but perhaps I should try and put some together as you aren’t the first to ask 🙂
I found your blog through Pinterest as it looking at this sofa from IKEA too! It’s almost perfect that this post is from 2019 – could you let me know your thoughts on the sofa now? How has it lasted & most importantly, is it comfortable? I’ve heard mixed reviews on the comfort of IKEA sofas! I love how you’ve styled it here, it just makes me want it more!
Hi Erin! Thanks for the note. Sofa has held up great. Very comfortable, and washable!
