Welcome to the Coastal Cottage Tour! Something unique about the property we recently purchased is that it has a second home. My mom will be moving in, and while we plan to do some upgrades to it, today I am going to take you on a quick tour. It’s a cozy cottage- and I would say it could be considered a tiny house. Though it makes very good use of the space that is there, it is incredibly compact!
The Kitchen
The cottage is timber frame construction. Upon entering you are greeted by a compact kitchen. It’s basic, and we have some ideas to make things a bit more functional for my mom, but for now it will do the trick!
The Living Area
From the kitchen, there is a step up into the main living area. The soaring ceilings are such a lovely feature, and the room is filled with large windows to allow plenty of light to stream in.
This area will include both a living room and dining space. My mom has a really cute style- she knows what she likes! She is originally from southern California, and loves the ocean, surfing and rattan 😉 These furniture pieces were left behind and will be moving out to make way for my mom’s furniture.
All of the timbers were milled from the forest around the property, which is pretty neat! The wood is warm, but not too overpowering. My mom is going to paint the walls in a crisp white to freshen things up, as the current color reads a little too yellow/cream in person.
The stove is the primary heat source and runs on propane. It’s such an adjustment to get used to here in BC… very few properties have natural gas! We may look at adding some baseboard heaters if necessary.
The Bathroom
To the back of the cottage there is a good size bathroom, which also houses the washing machines and hot water tank. Above that is a sleeping loft. We have plans to add a main floor bedroom, as that will be much more practical for my mom. So the sleeping loft will be used as a tv space. The bedroom will be added on through the sliding glass doors pictured above.
The bathroom has a great soaker tub, which is perfect because my mom loves baths! The layout of the laundry is a bit awkward, so we are pondering the idea of a stacking set so we can also add some much needed closed storage- or possibly moving the laundry into the *new* bedroom closet.
Video Tour
We assumed a tenant when we purchased the property, so it has been good to get into the cottage now that he has moved out to dream and finalize some plans. We are planning to start a series all about the cottage reno on my youtube channel! In the mean time, here is a walkthrough video of the entire cottage, including the loft.
In a normal world, my mom spends a lot of time travelling- so this will make a perfect home base for her. I am so looking forward to having her nearby, and I am especially grateful we are able to live close to each other during these times. The cottage is nestled in the trees, so its private. It is just down our lane past the barn!
There is plenty of clean up to do around the cottage, but it will be transformed in no time! Thanks for stopping by the blog today. Hope you have a great weekend.

P.S.- I am not sure if you caught them in the first photo… but it’s 2 weeks before Christmas and there are little white roses still blooming! This moderate climate is blowing my mind ya’ll!
Can’t wait to see what you do with this cottage. You do not disappoint!
Merry Christmas!
