It’s week two of the ORC and that means it’s time for a kitchen update with all things related to our cottage kitchen renovation project! We have made some progress- and while I wanted to share more of the design plan last week that post was getting crazy long! I’ll be sharing the whole process on my youtube channel and you can catch this weeks episode below.

I am SO EXCITED about the doors we will be going with- they’re from a Canadian company called Kitch. They create a wide range of doors the fit IKEA kitchen cabinet boxes. We are going with the 2″ shaker profile.Β
So, let’s talk a bit about the direction I am moving in for this kitchen… think classic cottage style with a little modern twist.
The main things I needed to select are
- cabinet color
- light fixtures
- faucet finish and style
- hardware finish and style
- backsplash
- countertops
This style board gives you an idea of the vibe I am going for in here.
The putty/mushroom/mist cabinets with a soft iron finish hardware- bin pulls for the drawers and knobs for the doors. I *think* I want to do a simple subway tile on the sink wall. We already have tongue and groove on the range wall- but I am toying with the idea of doing a “hand painted” style tile just behind the range. I’ll let you know when and if I find something!!
I am really surprised with the more clean/modern fixtures I am drawn to. There were a few areas Matt had an opinion on. He wanted stainless appliances, and a functional, simple faucet. From there I basically show him 2 or 3 options I like, and he chooses one. It’s a process that works for us! We’ve bought the faucet, I’ve finalized hardware, and now to get our appliances.
Ok- so progress!! We cleared out the old cabinets and shelves…
We have built and hung the first round of cabinets… on the stove wall.
We also tore out the chimney chase- which was way too big for it’s own good…
And framed in the new pantry. In order to allow for the clearance of the chimney, I went with a 15″ deep cabinet. It goes all the way up to the ceiling- and even though the photos are awful- just envision how wonderful it will be to have all the closed storage. I wasn’t sure if we would be able to use that space- and I am so glad we can!!
Next up we will be finishing up demo of the wall, and taking the old cabinets along the sink wall out. Then it will be time to run the new electrical for the plugs, and pot lights and put up the pine on the ceiling. Finally- it will be time to build and install the remaining cabinets. We are expecting doors the third week of October which is going to be here before we know it!
I hope you enjoyed this little update… and I’ll try and have better photos for you next week. Hope you enjoyed the video too! It’s so fun to work on these types of projects with Matt.

This is looking great Ashlea! Love the farmhouse sink!
thank you Nicole!
Good luck with the demo of the old cabinets (if they come out in one piece, you can probably find someone to buy them from you!). I love a tall pantry and you’re right, even the narrow ones offer so much storage π Excited to see it come together!
