Yay! That’s all I can say about getting new windows, and ticking that off from the house renovation list! I now have new windows that open and close, and are so much warmer in the winter! We used to have literal ice on our windows during the winter. I loved the character of the original wood windows, but the storm windows needed so much work just to make them functional, that in the end we opted to replace the original windows.
The new windows are so much more secure- since the other ones were just single pane glass. I always felt a little worried about them shattering. You might also notice that the front door has a new look… I actually painted it at the end of last summer, and never shared it here on the blog! The color is “grey mist.” I had some exterior paint in that color from when we painted our commercial building exterior- so I thought I would try it out on the doors. Yay for a free change.
I’m going to ignore the fact that this poor old deck needs replacing, and the siding could use a wash… and just celebrate the nicely stained trim. Ok… theres a little tiny bit of wood fill I need to take care of too, but let’s just pretend it’s done for the moment shall we?
We purchased our windows from Home Depot, and we’re really happy with the experience. We gave them our measurements, they delivered, and then we installed everything ourselves. They are vinyl sash windows, and these ones did not come with a nailing fin/flange- since we wanted to keep our exterior trim up. If they had the nailing fin, we would have had to remove the exterior trim. (not sponsored FYI!)
Our new kitchen window does have the nailing fin, since we just bought in stock windows – you can see what it looks like in the photo below. This window will finish the same as all of the windows on our addition- which is flush with the trim/siding. Whereas the other windows are set back with a sill.
While I had my brush out for the first coat of stain a few weeks ago, I also decided to give the bay window trim and skirting a fresh coat of white. It really freshened it up. I’m going to hit these shakes up with some oil as well. We’ve used a clear coat on all of our natural shakes, to keep the warm cedar wood tone. It’s hard to believe it’s been 6 or 7 years since we first put these up! The blue is a Behr color called “Arrowhead Lake” color matched in BM Arbourcoat. It’s such an amazing exterior stain product! I definitely recommend it.
I have a date with a caulking gun, and then I’ll get the final coat of stain on the windows. That’s my weekend project- and if I’m really lucky I’ll get some work done on the siding too 😉
