Things have been very busy lately! Monday through Wednesday seem to buzz by in a whir of activity. Let’s just say I am really looking forward to Thursday, when I can take a breather, and restock our kitchen cupboards! I really do need to get some great meals prepped and in the freezer. I know this would make life much easier- if you have any great recipes, please share!
I am very excited about one activity that has been occupying most of my “free” time (which is slim these days) and that is the preparation for our first big Raise Their Voice Event. It is Called “Raise Their Voice: The Trafficked and Exploited” and was essentially birthed out of our need to respond to the reality of human slavery; individuals wondering how they can focus their passion and energy to combat the exploitation of men, women, children. Not only do we at RTV feel compelled to become more educated and informed on this topic, so that we may effectively address the problems, and be active in finding solutions (and in turn carrying them out!) but we have been overwhelmed by the response of people in our own community who find themselves in a similar place.
When my husband and I attended the Collective Shout Conference in New Haven, CT in November of 2010 hosted by Love146– we received many comments along the lines of “You came all the way from Canada? You must be serious about this stuff!” My friends, this stuff IS serious! It demanded our attention, and we simply could not deny the conviction within us to do something. We were so inspired by the many hearts that are in a place to not only care for the individuals, but to fight for them. Everyday people: students, housewives, lawyers, social care workers, dads, survivors, who will no longer be silent about the atrocities that occur right under our noses.
We realized that Canadians needed an opportunity to become more informed, to be inspired and encouraged that they are not in this fight alone! We are so excited about the artists, speakers, and workshop leaders that will be coming together for this amazing event. It is a starting place- and we are hoping it is only the beginning of bigger and better things! We are humbled by the response of many who are not only willing to help, but are eager to be a part of this. In numbers we find strength.
Through out this experience, I am constantly realizing that I do not have all the solutions, and answers. But I know that simply by raising the questions, and seeking collaboration with others who have passion, we will see change! We will see victims become survivors, survivors become champions. We will see so many hearts changed. I can only continue to hope.
Hope is what keeps me moving when I feel discouraged by the many unturned stones. When I fear for the one who is hidden from our sight. When I feel overwhelmed by the fact that for many, their reality is one of bondage, servitude, entrapment, exploitation. I can begin to feel so small when faced with the enormity of this problem. But then, I find such hope when there are others who I can link arms with. We are in this fight, and will not give up. That is the strength and will I pray for.
She Has a Name Premiers in a week- and I am trying to brace myself for the wave that will ensue. Something much larger than a ripple, that I believe will have a life changing empact. I can not express how moved I have been by this story. I know it will change lives. Big words? Yes. But I know it in my heart. If you have an opportunity to attend this play in Calgary or Red Deer, I encourage you not to miss it. Don’t be turned away by the “difficult” content. Sometimes things in this world are hard. If you can move beyond the hardness of the story, and into a place of knowing that your story would mean less, had you never heard it, you just might find yourself giving love to someone who has never, ever known it. In all it’s intricacy, depth and mystery. Love transforms.
And if you feel so moved, join us in April- let your passion move you beyond emotion, and into action. You will have the opportunity to hear from some leading activists on trafficking in Canada, including MP Joy Smith. Here is an invitation, from me to you, to add your voice!
