Design Dilemma: Choosing Frames for a Gallery Wall

I have a design dilemma, and I would love to have you weigh in. I want to create a family gallery wall on the large wall leading up our stairway- but I can’t decide what to do with the frames! It might sound silly, but this wall is very visible from the room… I have been toying with black or white frames- but I still can not make up my mind. Here are a few photos to give you an idea of the space…

Here is the view from the top of the stairs. I want to hang the gallery wall on the large white wall to the right.

I recently hung up our new family banner, and now I want to begin filling this wall with pictures of our family… finally!!

So please- give me your thoughts and all your opinions- I can’t promise I’ll go with them, but I am hoping it will help me decide in one direction or another. White, Black, thick thin? I don’t think I want to mix up the frames or do wood and eclectic… I just love how calm it is in here, and don’t want it to get overly busy. I am also leaning towards color photography as well… but I am not closed to black and white. I just love my babies beautiful eyes, and hair and sweet little lips. They’re captured so beautifully in color. Here are a few photos to spark your wheels- and please feel free to send me any of your faves on pinterest!

I like the idea of a variety of frame sizes- but definitely on the larger side so as not to have it get too busy.

  1. First I thought that a wood colour similar to your flooring and bannister would work. Then I read you wanted to keep the room calm, so think that white would accomplish that. The black is very dramatic and would definitely pop your eyes to the wall and pictures.

  2. I love how the wood elements warm your beautiful space, and I think wood frames on the gallery wall would contribute to that.

    1. Thanks for the thoughts Dina. We have so much wood in this room- the floors, ceiling and the mantle on the fireplace, the coffee table and piano… I worry more wood might be too much wood?!

  3. white, calm let’s u enjoy at the photo…the black frames demand the attention first and make the wall seem to busy for me. 🤗✨
