Ok. Ya’ll. Yes. We have a development permit hanging in our window, our plans in our pocket (you know what I mean) and quotes galore! And bulging eye balls to complete the look. Our addition is happening.
Our goal is to get our foundation poured before the start of October… feels lofty, but completely possibly according to the foundation co. So, I am learning about building permits, design, and budget! Crash course contractor… yes! Can you judge my excitement based on my over use of exclamation points?
A few things we have to decide ASAP. Fireplace- wood or gas. My heart wants wood, my cozy self wants wood… and my practical side wants wood… what if there was a storm and we had no power or gas… but we could keep warm with our wood fire… totally realistic, but hopefully never happens. But, wood fireplaces are not necessarily the best heat givers… gas is more effecient, perhaps more safe? But definitely not as cool. So, that brings us to a fireplace with an insert and fan, to circulate the heat… but, doesn’ t look as pretty. Any thoughts? I am open! Points to remember:
-This is a cottage! think… cute but rustic
-Wood is cheap…. and available
-I really am totally biased to wanting wood… but, there is heat loss? Not as efficient.
Ok, so those are my lame points. If you have an opinion, please tell me why!
Next point… windows. I REALLY want wood windows. We have charming wood windows in our existing house, and I think it would really carry that charm into the addition and help it to feel as though it has always been a party of the house… with fewer warped floor boards. So, I am awaiting the damage with our wood window quote. Believe me, I am coming to understand the maintenance of wood (see: 17 storm windows to repair and refinish) but, they can last for so long when properly maintained, and look beautiful.
Sometimes I am so focused on just getting all of the prep work for the addition completed, I forget what it all means… we will have a new bedroom! Bathroom, living room, bonus room, and monstrous room for the boys… I also have to remember that the real work hasn’t even begun, but I have to admit, I am really enjoying the process so far. I feel so blessed to be able to do this, and am praying all goes smoothly! And on budget 🙂
I have some pictures for you guys of projects we have done in the house, and need to get them up… but, I can’t seem to find my camera. I know it is somewhere, but they will have to wait. In the mean time, here a few places I am clicking:
Ana-White.com She is pretty much my role model… she has a zillion free DIY furniture plans, built a house with her hubby, and is now building the momplex… my childhood dreams of being a carpenter are only being fanned.
The Lettered Cottage They’ve sold their cottage! It’s true! So you know there are all types of fun things in the future. In the mean time, I am loving their fireplace redo, and guest bath update. Reminds me that I should post the fireplace redo I did of my Sis-in-laws fireplace… perhaps she will join in on a little fall mantle fun! The Autumn Link up at TLC is starting next week with Fall table decor… join in, or get inspired by some great ideas!
And my final share with you:
Mama Styles My sister has a new blog, all about being fashionable post baby (ies) and on a budget! She really is one of the most stylish people I know! She has always been into fashion, and has maintained strict colour coded closets and a PINK load of laundry for the last 10-15 years. I also find her to be very funny, and I think you will too. (no pressure K!)

So exciting Ash! It sounds like your home is coming together beautifully! What a sweet adventure 🙂 Just had a thought regarding fireplace decision making! I used to prefer gas fireplaces for the same reasons of efficiency, safety, etc. Now we live in a home with a wood fireplace and I’d never have it any other way! It’s amazing! Cozy and perfect. And even heat wise I’m impressed every time how much it heats the house, so much so that I’m usually opening windows to cool it down haha 🙂 I think, go with your gut on this one! XO. Kalie
Thanks Kalie! I needed that 🙂 I really want wood, and that is now what we are going to go with after much debating back and forth… Yay! 🙂
