This week we are making progress on the kitchen in the way of getting the backsplash installed, and choosing paint! I am finishing this kitchen off as part of the One Room Challenge. It’s technically week 4, but week 2 for me! If you have been following me for some time, you might know that I seem to have this thing for painting cabinets. In fact it was painting our original farmhouse kitchen cabinets in our last house that put this little blog on the map. So of course, I can not leave well enough alone… the kitchen island was begging for some color.
In my heart of hearts I kind of wanted to paint the cabinets “creamy mushroom” which is the color I have started to paint our trim. But, I just really don’t feel like painting all the cabinets. So I though I could try it on the island, or the backsplash. I decided to try it on the backsplash first…
I used the creamy mushroom around the window behind the sink, and I like the warmth it brings next to the stone. But I don’t feel the same about it on the backsplash area. I want the backsplash to feel like an extension of the cabinets (I have plans to add a shelf and possibly some peg hooks)
When we got the primed boards up it felt like a whole lot of stark white. Between the roof, cabinets and counter tops- it was too much. So I tried the creamy mushroom… but I don’t like it. Oh well! It’s only paint.
Once I paint the backsplash white, I think that adding a little shelf so I can have a few decorative items will help to break things up. We still have some finishing to do on the backsplash, but its 100 times better than it was!
Since I didn’t love the creamy mushroom on the backsplash, it became a contender for the island. I also had a $3 can of oops paint in a dark greeny blue. It was a little too dark, so I mixed up a custom color using it as a base and I love it. I tested them both on this lower cabinet door. Which needs a little backstory. The drawer of this cabinet arrived damaged. It was a whole debaucle trying to get it replaced… it took MONTHS. It has finally arrived! They actually sent us an entire replacement cabinet- not just a door. But oh well! So I used the damage drawer to test the colors.
I think either would look lovely. I debated for several days, while I stared at the backsplash… lol
Despite being the wrong color, we have to take a moment to appreciate how much better the backsplash is… because it has been very frankenstein for the last few months! Matt had to decommission the old fan. We glued and screwed some furring strips into the old tile and stone, and then stapled the wood panelling onto those.
In addition to the backsplash, Matt got the island panels finished, and we also started work on the fridge panel. We decided to make one out of MDF. I love how much more built in it feels already. We found our beautiful fridge for over 40% off- because they weren’t able to get anymore in due to supply chain issues. We are very happy with it! It is GE and I can look up details if you’d like. We hope to eventually update the stove, but we aren’t there yet!
I went with my gut on the island and chose the darker custom shade. I really love it!
It feels so lovely in person, and feels a little bit older… which is a good thing in this kitchen I think. I’ll share more about the island to come… here is hoping I can get the paint projects moved along this week! I am also hoping to get our custom toe kick complete, and start on the peg shelf! Here is a little inspiration to give you and idea of what I am going for with the shelf:
Of course the cabinets are a lovely mushroom tone… ugh! Until next week!
