We recently completed a DIY Open Cabinet Base to add a much needed work surface in our kitchen, as well as some additional storage space. Our new farm comes with a few quirks, one of which is the original farmhouse clad in wood, wood, and more wood! It’s rather basic construction, and we are working on inexpensive “phase 1” projects to brighten the house, and make it a little more functional for our family!
I found an old work bench in one of the barns, and gave it a good and thorough cleaning. Initially Matt wasn’t so sure about the idea- but once I dragged it outside and took the old top off, I shared the vision. Thankfully he jumped on board. We had an extra piece of butcher block countertop leftover from our kitchen reno and instead of cutting it to fit the base, Matt extended the base and was able to match it up using scrap materials.
Don’t you just love scraps?! I used some fusion mineral paint in the color “Soapstone” that I had in my stash, so this project was completely free! I’m so glad that Matt is so handy, and that we have the tools to quickly put something like this together.
I didn’t take many photos of the process, however I did document it on my instagram stories. You can find the entire project saved in my highlights under “Kitchen Cabinet.” I share on instagram as @thismamasdance
Thanks for stopping by today! More to come on the kitchen this week.

You are going to live having this much additional work surface in your kitchen! What a great interim solution.
