It feels so good to be back at home with my munchkins! This was the first time I have left Finley for so long, and my heart was missing her big time. We had a really chill day today, so I decided to snap a few photos of a piece that I painted a little while back now. I would describe it as being temperamental, but in the end we made it through. My toddleby did something kind of amazing today- she took a 3 hour nap! My boys were playing lego sweetly, and since I managed to be pretty productive throughout the morning, I rewarded myself with a little happy time behind the camera! Here is the “Chippy White Dresser” makeover 😉
I love most everything about this piece, and while I didn’t initially plan to paint it, it just felt a little too dark and heavy in our room. Here is how it started (good thing there are iphones to document such things!)
I’ll tell you a little story about this dresser. I was really nervous to paint it, because it is so old, it was gifted to us, and it truly was beautiful as is. Sometimes it’s hard to paint wood! But it wasn’t quite working with the rest of the room… so, I decided to go for it using Country Chic Chalk Paint in Vanilla Frosting, which is a creamy off white. After the first coat dried, the whole thing started turning PINK. And I am not talking pinkish, I mean giant deep pink streaks! I wanted to cry. I was certain I had ruined the dresser and wasted my money on chalk paint, it was not pretty! But then I pulled it together, attended to google, and used clear poly on top of everything to hopefully seal in the stain bleed through. Before I clear polly’d I distressed the piece, so that I could make certain I would be able to sand things down the way I wanted. Thankfully the poly worked, and there is no more pink… phew!
I picked up this green tool box on a recent thrift trip with my hubby, while on a 2 night getaway, SANS KIDS! I know… it’s a little too wonderful to even talk about, but I am sure I’ll tell you more about it in a future post. I have a few more goodies to share with you as well… it’s amazing what I was able to grab in 20 minutes! ha!
I really like the curves of the mirror, and the hand carved details.
The wood had some beautiful chipping that happened with a little help from a worn sanding sponge. I left the original hardware and painted right over it, then lightly sanded it to reveal some of the details.
I think the base of this dresser is one of my favorite parts about it, the bottom is so chunky!
It is quite fun to “play” with paint, and I was really pleased with how differently this piece turned out compared to the dresser I painted for Finley’s room, also using the same brand of chalk paint. It feels worn but not over the top.
The week ahead is a bit busy, and I need to get my bearings, but I’ll tell you one thing that put a little pep in my step today- there are tulips peeking out in my garden. Could it be? Is spring really in the air?
