Lately I have found myself craving simplicity, organization and order in our house. It seems that every where I turn there is a little pile of chaos that needs sorting, purging, chucking. It would have been so lovely if we had gotten everything “finished” before we moved into the addition… but it didn’t happen. It’s not the end of the world, but we are kind of moved in yet lacking a key component of the house: Storage.
Our closets and built ins are still needing to be built, but out of all of the work we need to complete, they just haven’t been a priority. I have started going through clothes, toys, and baby stuff- and am starting to make progress to see what it is we need to store, so that we can design a smart solution! We have also have items in our storage shed, since we majorly downsized for the last 3 years! So, I am also cracking into that labaryinth. Part of me wants to just not look at it, and get rid of it… part of me 😉
The main areas I am focussing on are: Our Master Bedroom Closet, our Mudroom Entry, and Office. I am longing for a command station from which to organize our life- blogging, homeschooling, running a home- not to mention the all important crafting! haha. We also don’t have a great system for sorting and storing all of the paper work that seems to be in our lives {anyone have a good system for this?}
To be honest, I know where to find things- but it is organized chaos. Far from neat and tidy! I am inspired by our very simple office corner update from several years ago. The shelving was thanks to a 1×8 and some ikea brackets, and we built the floating desk out of scrap plywood. It was about creating a functional niche- and I remember how good it felt to designate an area for a purpose.
I so very much want to have “A Place for Everything, and Everything in it’s Place!” The trouble is- I get started organizing and then run out of time. So, everything I have sorted {on my bed!} ends up going back into a box, basket or on the floor… our bedroom has been the “operation organize our life” zone for a while. Well! No more! I am motivated- I am getting us organized and saying goodbye to things we don’t need or use! Too much stuff is making these Mama tired.
Any tips? How do you tackle what to keep and what to pass on? As a “creative” couple- we both have our collections of “could be useful someday items” but I really don’t want to be storing stuff for 10 years… anyone else deal with this?
