Oh man, the punny-ness is reaaaaal. I just couldn’t resist. But, I wanted to share my thoughts on our original wood doors, and open up a little survey as to what direction you would go!
So… in the original part of our house there are 3 solid, fir doors. They are located in a hallway, and aren’t really visible from anywhere in the house other than when standing directly in front of the hallway entrance off the kitchen. I had wanted to strip them- because wood. But I am second guessing that.
I am slowly painting over all the original wood trim. See exhibit A, Theo’s Windows:
They are now a warm white, and the room feels so much larger, current and airy.
You might remember the doors in question from when I shared my wallpaper project, which I have finished (praises) but didn’t share the finished product of here on the blog! At least I don’t think I did. Anyways, this one leads to a small bathroom. Aren’t the glass knobs sweet?
There are three of them and they’re tucked away in a small hall off the kitchen. So I have had grand plans to strip them and restain them to match our refinished floors. But, that sounds like a lot of work right about now. Matt suggested painting them white to match our trim. It would also tie in with all of the new doors in the addition, which look like this:
But part of me loves their character, quirk, and the story of the old house. We won’t really have any original wood left if I do paint them…. So, my question for you is- what would you do? Leave them for now until I can refinish them, or call it a day and paint them white?! Or something else. Ya know how sometimes when you survey people, it makes you realize- nope- don’t wanna do that… or yes- definitely want to do this!
So let me hear your thoughts here or on instagram.

I prefer them painted white, especially if the alternative would be doing a lighter stain. But, I probably do not appreciate stain as much as I should. I really like the look of Theo’s newly painted trim.
Crazy thought here. Young House Love has done some interesting things with painting interior doors pastel colors. Not sure that would work, but just tossing it out there.
Not Crazy at all Kim!! I LOVE their pink doors in the duplex- and they have some really cute doors in the Pink House. Total YHL fan here- haha. The inside of our bathroom door is painted- and chippy and just not looking good- so I have thought of perhaps doing something fun on the inside of that door at the very least- since it will need to be re-painted anyways.
I’m all for painting them white or the color of your trim. I know there are people who feel it’s a travesty to paint original wood, but not me. It’s cleaner, gives a feeling of opening up an area, and you have plenty of wood (floors) still.
We definitely do have lots of wood with the floors! Good point.
The great thing about paint is you can always strip it off later! I think white would tie everything together.
That is true Janice- though after stripping paint off furniture pieces it’s definitely not my favorite job 😉 I agree with white tying it all together!
hi mizzzz ash
I have had them both ways in different houses… and the latest house the door stained r stained and i painted the trim around them white… with white doors you see a lot more dirt, scrapes, chips etc., with four kids it might be something you want to think about …😊
That is such a good point Mizz D. I actually just noticed the boys’ bedroom door- it’s filthy. haha But it’s upstairs and so I never really see it, where-as these are right off the kitchen and get a ton of daily use.
It all looks so good! Great ideas!Love that piano as it has such character!
Thank you Rose! We just love that piano- it is so special to us. I just got a new to us bench for it- which is wonderful because my boys can keep all of their music books in there. It makes for a much tidier space.
