Vintage Chalkboard {Thrifted Finds}

I have mentioned my love of chalkboards before, so if you’ve been reading here for a while it would come as no surprise to you that I bought 2 giant {about 4ftx8ft) chalkboards off kijiji. They were posted for $10 and $2 respectively (due to the second one being damaged slightly) They were from the basement of an old church, and the lady selling them said they weren’t worth much and to make her an offer. She felt bad about me paying $12- but honestly, the money was for an after school children’s program- and they needed the space. I had no problem paying $12, because I was giddy as a school girl. She asked what I was going to do with giant chalkboards… I told her I would hang one in my dining room…. umm because we homeschool and use that room a lot.

Honestly I would hang a chalkboard in my dining room even if we didn’t home school, but I like to pretend it’s rooted in practicality and not because it means I can create chalkboard art 😉
vintage chalkboardThe massiveness of this chalkboard is hard to convey… it is huge! It makes this little fireplace unit {that I am currently using as a side board} seem itsy. But it isn’t. I have debated selling that fireplace, because while it worked really well in our last house decor/scale wise, it is quite mod. It does cast off great heat, and a realistic flame, so it is certainly cozy. {I could have bought a skinnier/taller white one, but it didn’t work well for the dimensions of our last LR, kind of wish I had now though} Eventually I would like to find a long side board, or perhaps build one this summer. I can discuss that another day though!chalk board in dining roomdaffodils with greens and bluesYes, I had fun putting together a co-coordinating color scheme of items from my kitchen. I am a nerd like that… more daffodils, some greens and blues! cottage sideboard That little cook book belonged to my grandma, who lived in Wolf Point, Montana. I am pretty sure that potato slicer came from Matt’s grandma, but my memory is a little foggy around that.wolf point cookbooksideboard detailsvintage chalkboard 2I plan on building a simple wood frame out of pine… kind of like this:

I absolutely love this dining room… so simple!

I have plans to eventually make some changes in our dining room, and this thrifted treasure has gotten me one step closer! I admire when people have area rugs under their tables… the floor under our table seems to always be disgusting?! Rice, crackers, play doh bits… I don’t think a rug would last a week in our house. Ha! Sometimes I wonder if we are just really messy kitchen folk… our kitchen rugs are always getting spilled on. Matt accidently dripped oily salad dressing on our mat by the sink… any advice for getting it out? It’s one of those cushy ones…
