Twiddly dee….

I don’t know what it is… but when my husband is away (which is not often) I get the urge to start and finish a major makeover, that otherwise would interfere with our lives just a little too much. I can’t really blame my hubby for not wanting to take on anything else… he is after all in the midst of building our addition which will give us an additional 1100 sq ft of living space! {insert: super awesome amazing husband!} I just am really starting to go crazy with our bathroom’s cramped design, and overall grungy feel. I feel like a clean bathroom makes you feel better about life… a grungy one is just… not good.

Speaking of my husband going away- remember this little striped number  that took place in our bedroom last year? That was accomplished back when my toddler still napped…

There are all types of wonky things happening in our bathroom… mismatched partially painted baseboard, an odd “stamped” tile pattern in the plaster, patched plaster, and holes in the wall (one which I may be responsible for when looking for ship lap… no dice) a lone light bulb, green walls and ceiling… lino, and an old sink with rust stains… which is smack dab in front of the door, plus, it leaks. The door opens right into the toilet (which sits behind the door) it is just awkward to say the least…. and forget it if someone is brushing their teeth, and someone else has to pee…

There are 3 factors that are holding me back from tackling the bathroom 1)Fund$$$: we are in the midst of a major reno, so we don’t have money to put towards a bathroom over haul 2) We are going to eventually have a new bathroom in the addition, so I figured we could live with this for a while… but after 7 months, I’m not so sure 3)It is our only bathroom… so we don’t really have the luxury of it being out of commission.

When I look at that list, my reservations are justified… however, I think I just *might be able to give this room a facelift that will GREATLY improve it’s function without costing us much.

Here is my plan:

  • -Paint the GREEN ceiling white. I already have white ceiling paint (win!)
  • -I purchased a silver chandelier from habitat when we first moved in with intentions to update the shades and put it in the bathroom… time to prep that to happen!
  • -collect some pallettes and start my first pallette wall
  • -build a vanity (using some leftover butcher block from last year’s kitchen reno  and scrap lumber from the build)
  • -paint the bathroom… I’m thinking gray, or white… or maybe even white, with stripes on one wall… not sure if this would be over kill with the palette wall… perhaps stripes on the ceiling?
  • -build in some much needed storage- perhaps a tall shelf…. with cubbies

Parts of the plan that will cost some mulah/require skills I don’t have… (aka. need the hubs!)

  • -moving the toilet, and rerouting plumbing
  • -re routing plumbing for the vanity
  • -replacing the light fixture
  • -a $ink bowl for the vanity
  • -faucet for $aid vanity

I have gone back and forth with how I want our cottage to feel… Do I want to stay classic, keep windows wood just because they are old… Stay traditional… Or make things look new and reno’d… And ultimately, I have decided, neither! I want to keep the character I love about our home, while making it uniquely ours, and putting our stamp on it! It isn’t meant to feel new, or old… just us!

Here are a few photos I have drawn inspiration from:

This is a shot of TLC’s DIY vanity and built ins. I think something like this in miniature could really work in our space:

I love the yellow accents with the grey:

Buuuuut I also looove this color scheme….

Here is a great little rustic vanity…

Well! Wish me luck. My goal is to start with some of the aesthetic elemets, and then get going with FUNCTION. I’m heading over to Ana-White to scour for some inspiration and perhaps some plans… and gearing up to start using the power tools. Only in little doses. I’ll keep you updated on the good, bad and ugly… yes. Shots of the bathroom as is. :-/

Ciao for now!

  1. Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you know a few of the pictures aren’t
loading properly. I’m not sure why but I think its a
linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different internet browsers and both show the same results.
