The Farmhouse Hutch Reveal Painted in MMS Grain Sack

I am so pleased to share with you this sweet painted farmhouse hutch in MMS Grain Sack. It is a very handmade piece of furniture- with little quirks and qualities that make it one of my favorite additions to our home.Farmhouse Hutch Makeover, Miss Mustard Seed Grain Sack| This Mamas Dance-1Farmhouse Hutch Makeover, Miss Mustard Seed Grain Sack| This Mamas Dance-14Farmhouse Hutch Makeover, Miss Mustard Seed Grain Sack| This Mamas Dance-3

As a reminder here is how this piece started out:Farmhouse Hutch, cream and yellow-7

I painted the sides and face front in MMS Grain Sack, which is a subtle grey. This was my first experience using milk paint, and I must admit it was a bit of a learning curve. I really had to experiment to get the right consistency. I think my first batch was too thin. With the second batch I kept adding more powder until I was happier with the coverage. I took advantage of some of the MMS video tutorials- especially the one about how to mix the milk paint. Think: table cream consistency. I also used the bonding agent, since this piece had so many old layers of paint, so it wasn’t a good candidate for a chippy finish.

The first thing I did was paint the entire thing in some leftover flat, white ceiling paint. I had planned to paint the inside with MMS Ironstone, but I actually liked the way the ceiling paint looked… it had a chalk like finish. I still plan on sealing the whole thing with a clear wax.

While I may try to track down some old hardware in the future, I wanted the piece to be functional in the mean time, so I painted the hardware with the same matte black spray paint I used for our barn door track.

Working on this piece was balm to my soul. It took about 2 evenings after I had put the kids to bed. My hubby is overseas shooting a feature film, so this piece offered a much needed distraction- and a creative canvas. I have also had this little pinecone garland rolling around in my mind for several weeks- but would you believe I can not seem to find my glue gun ANYWHERE!! I have searched the house high and low and I am convinced it has vanished. I am often putting things in random places because of my toddleby… I am praying it will turn up, but I may just buy a new one. The kicker is I was at Michael’s a few weeks ago to get more glue sticks… #shouldaboughtabackup

This farmhouse hutch might be the best $80 I’ve spent in a while 😉  I just luuuuuurve it. What do you think? Any project plans for you this weekend?
