The Rustic Farmhouse Drop Leaf Table

Earlier this week I shared a photo of a table my husband picked up from the dump. We’ve all seen those 90’s tables, in all their yellowy orange glory, well this one was exactly that. The feet of the pedestal had been chewed by a dog, the table top was in excellent condition though.  I’m calling this the Rustic Farmhouse Drop Leaf Table since I decided to have fun experimenting with refinishing the top to suit a rustic farmhouse vibe (everyone’s favorite buzz words)- using a custom mix of stain and antiquing wax. I’ll share all the details in another post, but for now here is the finished product!

This is how the table started:

I added a little “character” to the top, aka banged it up a bit- I love how the dark antiquing wax brings out the details. I wasn’t able to completely capture the warmth with a hint of grey wash in the wood-  but I think you can get the idea.

This table will be going up in our loft as a games/puzzle table. I have a vision for that space rolling around in my mind, but I haven’t had much time to pull it together. For me, that’s part of the fun of having a home… living with it for a while, seeing how we use it, and making it ours a little bit at a time.

These hollyhocks are one of my all time favorites. Aren’t they such a unique variety? The plant is well over 6 feet tall this year, and I absolutely adore all of the beautiful pink blooms!Fresh Apples, Pink Hollyhocks |This Mamas Dance-2

So what do you think of the rustic farmhouse drop leaf table? Is it an improvement?? I was really nervous to use the wax, but I think it was well worth it. It created a matte yet water resistant finish- and since we won’t be eating at this table, I think it will hold up just fine.

  1. I anxious to learn how you did the lamps, I have a pair of brass lamps in my living room and wonder how the country chic paint antiquing will adhere to the brass, I will appreciate the information of how to, thanks
