Picking Paint Colors

I really enjoy picking paint colors! I am a HUGE believer of sampling said colors- beyond the paint chip. To buy a few samples for around $3 each is a worthwhile investment when you are going to be painting an entire  room- or in my case- a set of cabinetry. I don’t want to go through all the work of prepping these cabinets, only to realize I don’t like the paint color. So, I like to test it, and see how it changes through out the day. Something that looks amazing in someone elses home might not be right for my space because of the lighting, or furnishings we’ve chosen.

Last week I shared some inspiration for painting our beverage bar in the living room- and I am happy to say I have settled on a scheme. Matt and I confirmed that we like the 2 toned idea- with white on top… so that at least narrowed things down! Now to find the right color for the lowers. I decided I wanted a bit of contrast- so went for darker samples for the bottom. I ended up bringing home 2 samples, and just painted one quick coat on some plywood scraps, which makes it easy for me to see how I like it next to our wall color and floors- as well as the backsplash and counter top.

The first color is inspired by MMS Shutter Grey- which is more of a blue grey. It looks quite blue in the photos- but reads a bit darker in real life.

And the second is more of a true grey. ( I want to spell grey gray, and I always spell colour color… Canadi/America)

Matt and I both like how the tile looks with that blue grey in play, things seem to really come alive. The plain grey feels a little too dull. Diplomat Blue is feeling a little too dark though, so I am on the hunt for something a little lighter… but I think I am going to walk by those samples for a few more days 😉

  1. The gray is classic timeless and subtle but I totally get the blue, it brings of the bluish gray in the tile beautifully …

    1. Thank you for your thoughts- I agree on both… I decided to paint the uppers white- and go back to the sample board for the lowers 🙂 It’s fun testing different things until I find whats right!
