One Room Challenge Week 2: Paint, a Pine Dresser, and the Plan

Well it’s Thursday, and as promised I have an update for you of the boys room. It’s week 2 of the One Room Challenge, and I have to say I am impressed that I accomplished anything this week! Step one was to clean the boys room- which felt amazing! I have a better grasp on the storage needed for their toys, books, and the impressive collections of sticks, rocks and bottle caps 😉 Boys are so fun!

I spent some time working on a style board, to give me a visual of how I want the space to feel. The three words I shared last week were cottage, coastal, and camp, so keeping that in mind, here is what I pulled together.

Cottage Bunk Room Style Board

When I look at the board I just feel happy. It says boy– but it can definitely grow with them. It isn’t too themey, which I like! So, now, it’s time to get to work.

I decided to take a risk (at least for me) and go dark on one of the walls. I LOVE the way it turned out. My 5 year old wants the whole room grey…part of me agrees with him.

Here is what it looked like before, toys and all!

The color I used is actually a wood stain I bought last year for outdoor use- the color is “Pewter” by Behr. It took 2 coats.

Don’t mind my two photo bombers. It’s just been that kind of day 😉

I would like to add more storage for books, because the boys read a lot. I am also planning to white wash the pine using the same technique from our Master Bedroom wall. I love that it still allows the wood grain to show but really tones down the yellows and red in the pine.

Speaking of pine, this quaint little pine dresser will be going somewhere in the room…

Isn’t he a cutie?! I love those little turned feet, and that little corbel type detail on the top.

While I was snapping photographs this was going on behind the scenes. What a cat! He is pretty much the most perfect little guy for our kiddos, he’s more like a dog than a cat…

He just sat there with his new accessories, keeping warm over the heat vent while Fin exclaimed “He likes it! He likes it!” I’m not as convinced…

I hope to get started on the white washing this week (there’s a lot of wall space!!) as well as adding shelving in the lockers. They don’t offer very functional storage right now.

One area I am a little stumped about are the window coverings. There are 4 windows in the room, all varying sizes and heights. For the large window pictured above I think my best option is a black out roller blind- because this room get’s a lot of the evening summer sun, and I don’t want to hide the trim work that Matt added. That wall is 14ft wide, so the windows are really long. Drapery panels just aren’t practical. What do you think? I love windows and don’t like to obstruct the light, but I think I would need to mount the rollers inside the opening.

You can follow along with the other bloggers and the 20 designers who are also a part of the One Room Challenge here.

As a fun add on to the One Room Challenge, I sent out an invitation to virtually join in with a room of your own, over on my Facebook Page. Feel free to leave a comment saying the room you are going to work on, and share progress photos on my page. I’d love to here from you and toss around ideas!

  1. I would do the roller blind and sheers. Ones where they are purely for looks, ones that are more like cheese cloth and you can still see the trim. A simple black rod like the master and maybe even clips instead of a rod pocket?!? You could still do the sheers every where on all the windows. But just not add rollers or blinds in the casing if its not needed. 🙂
