Mudroom Update: Doors on the Built Ins

Friday seems like a great day for a little progress report. I am happy to say that the mudroom update is moving right along. We built and hung doors on our built ins, so I thought I would share some new photos of the space.  We built the cabinets for about $330. Here is a breakdown of the cost of the project:

  • 4 sheets of plywood (we used 3.5) est @ $40/ea= $160
  • 5 pieces of 8 ft 1×2  @8.33 ea= $41.65
  • 4 hinges @ $2.33/ea = $9.32
  • 1 can of Killz Primer est. @ $40
  • 4 pieces 8ft 1×3 (door trim) @ $11.25ea= $45
  • 1 pack of tongue and groove pine est @ $20
  • handles est @ $2.50/ea
  • hanging rod est@ $12

total: $332.77

The built ins measure about 89″x 56.5″ and are 24.5″ deep. The closet portion is about 40″ wide. We looked at buying an Ikea system, but figured we could DIY it for less, and get the configuration we wanted while maximizing every square inch of space.

I still need to purchase another magnetic latch and we need to add a little block to the bottom to hold the doors nice and snug. For some reason we had one of these already…White and Black Small Mudroom with Built Ins | This Mamas Dance-12

I’m the kind of person that probably over thinks things, but it took me a lot of pondering and browsing Pinterest to settle on this configuration. We could have done double hanging, but opted for open boot storage on the bottom with full length hanging, since I have long coats. We kept the open cubbies for mittens, keys and all that good stuff- since we can’t fit a console or table in this room. It works really well for us, and I love that I can now close the doors. It feels SO MUCH CLEANER!

Can I just tell you something? I love baskets. These ones are especially large and sturdy- about the size of a laundry basket. They have extra boots, reusable shopping bags and helmets in them. So glam.

I really like the floor tiles we have in here- they blend in really well with dirt! They are a large 24×12″ slate tile from HD. We paired them with a dark grey grout. We still need to seal them… I think. They are a bit scratched, but I really don’t like shiny slate tiles… so we have left them for the time being. Every other day of the year I have a black waffle mat industrial kind of rug in here… but today I took it out so you could see our floors. I actually love that mat, because it traps all the sand, dirt and snow, and it doesn’t budge ever! I really do not like when door mats get all bunched up at the door. Plus it hides dirt. Which I am sure you have gathered, I like.

I had some old hooks kicking around that got a few coats of my favorite matte black spray paint. The hinges and screws also got a paint job- and were originally galvanized. I couldn’t find black ones readily available in that style. These hinges mimic the ones in our kitchen, as well as a few other built ins in the original part of the house- so I decided to go with it.White and Black Small Mudroom with Built Ins | This Mamas DanceWhite and Black Small Mudroom with Built Ins | This Mamas Dance

There are still things to finish, like trim along the top of the walls where the shiplap and ceiling meet, baseboard, and well- maybe putting real paint on the walls instead of ceiling paint. But this room has me feeling happy every time I come through the door. Who can believe this is what it looked like less than 3 weeks ago?!

Hell hath no furry like a Pinterest-binged mother and a can of flat white ceiling paint. Well, and a crow bar and a husband who rips all the lumber down on the table saw and builds cabinets and such as.

I think the story of this room is the power of paint- we just saw exhibit A. And now as a refresher, here is what our built ins looked like for way too long:

It’s bananas I tell you! Trim and caulking are also a gift to all DIY spaces. And non DIY spaces. You may notice our doors that I love, that we built… funnily after they sat for a few days they both had some shrinkage on one groove- so I will need to touch that seam up with paint. I still need to paint one more tough coat on these babies- I had planned to poly but it immediately turned a horrible yellow and I wanted to cry. Thankfully I was worried it might yellow- and so I just did a test spot. But now I have investigated and will be getting a product from BM in the final finish to use on both these and in the living room.

We still have that gorgeous shoe rack, but I am pretty sure it’s getting the boot (pun intended?) since we have room for all of the shoes (and some) under the built ins now that its clean and organized. Yay!

Everyone has given the thumbs up on this room that get used everyday for all the greetings and goodbyes of our greatest adventures 😉
