MMS White Wax and the Press Back Chairs

Press Back Chair, Miss Mustard Seed White Wax

If you’ve been following along for a while you might remember the set of 6 press back chairs I scored for $100. They were just what we needed for our family of 5. I recently tested out some white wax on one of them in an attempt to tone down the orange base- without having to either strip them, or fully paint them. I am still up in the air about whether or not I will paint them out at some point- but I thought I would share the effect of the white wax.

Press Back Chairs, White WaxI brushed the wax over the chair- working in sections, taking care to really work it into the carved details. I then buffed it with a rag after allowing it to sit for several minutes. I left quite a bit of wax around the spindles and in the carved details. I love the way it draws attention to the carvings- a detail that previously felt a bit lost.

Here is an old shot from when I originally purchased them.chair 6

What do you think? Would you wax the rest, paint em or leave em?

  1. I have very similar chairs and I painted them with old white chalk paint and I LOVE them. I wiped off the paint in the carved areas and distressed them a little….leaving the rest of the natural distressing to my family. I love the white and they go with everything. I’ve never used the white wax but I think it’s a huge improvement over the orange!

    1. I am such a huge fan of white, your chairs sound lovely… families are very good at helping us achieve the distressed look- aren’t they 😉 I might still go the painted route- as I have only waxed one chair to see what I think. hmmm… decisions, decisions.
