Miniature Stocking Garland for a Farmhouse Hutch

I’ll be honest, our weeks and weekends have been very packed since starting school- so this was a welcome occasion. We set to work sewing some scrappy stockings. I have wanted to create a miniature stocking garland for quite some time- and now I have! It’s just a cute as I had hoped. I strung it up across our farmhouse hutch.

I decided to string mine up as a garland on our hutch. My favorite ones are the “grain sack” ones- I’ll show you how I created those in a minute. The rest of the fabric is scrap upholstery and a tea towel. I drew a freehand pattern, and made sure to use all pre-hemmed edges, so it was very speedy! Once they were sewn I just hot glued a hemp knot on the inside corner.

To make the “grain sack” I used drop cloth fabric and craft paint. To turn acrylic craft paint into fabric paint you simply mix with a fabric medium- I got mine from Michaels, and it is from the Martha Stewart line. Works wonderfully!

This is about as easy as it sounds. I used scotch tape, taped a wide line in the centre and 2 narrow lines on either side of that.

Apply a generous amount of paint with a stubby hard bristled brush. You can run your lines vertically or horizontally. Once you are happy with the coverage remove the tape and allow paint to dry.Miniature Stocking Garland | via Ashlea of This Mamas Dance

To sew these stockings simply place the good sides inwards. Sew around the edge and turn right side out. If you’d like to hand them up you could sew or hot glue a ribbon or hemp tie inside. I used hot glue.

I found these sweet little gift boxes at the dollar store of all places. They pair perfectly with a cedar sprig.Miniature Stocking Garland | via Ashlea of This Mamas DanceMiniature Stocking Garland | via Ashlea of This Mamas DanceMiniature Stocking Garland | via Ashlea of This Mamas DanceMiniature Stocking Garland | via Ashlea of This Mamas Dance

Styling shelves might be one of my favorite things to do. Pardon all the snaps! There is nothing quite as fun as pretending you are in an issue of Cottage Christmas, or as though you have an antique hutch as your wrapping station… my wrapping station is usually set up on my bedroom floor!

I am hoping for a few more days of crafting with my boys… are you a crafter? I find Christmas seems to bring it out in me most… This miniature stocking garland was a great little afternoon project.

  1. I am a brand new follower of your blog and I am loving your crafting skills! I discovered your blog from the Christmas Mantel tour and I was smitten then and there. This miniature stocking garland is too cute and your instructions make it sound within my limited ability. I think I will use some ticking tea towels that have been needing to be useful. Thank-you for this delightful post and I’m looking forward to becoming a faithful follower.
