Living Floral Wreath

Living Floral Wreath via Ashlea of This Mamas DanceSome much needed shrub trimming brought about the urge to try my hand at making a living floral wreath out of some of my fresh blooms from the garden. I have never done anything like this before, but it felt so wonderful to snip flowers from the garden and spend the afternoon creating. Since getting pregnant I haven’t felt very inspired to do much beyond the necessities, simply because I was feeling so sick and tired. However now that I have reached the half way point my nausea has subsided, and I’m starting to feel my energy return.

This is a complete hack process that I came up with based on what I had on hand at home. I think you can actually buy full floral foam wreath forms which would have been useful, however this was just a spontaneous project as my daughter napped. Glorious.

It actually looked pretty as is at this point- although I wouldn’t include maple branches again as they got droopy really quickly. The cotoneaster and poplar held up really nicely. Now, this is where things got a bit hacky… I stuck a thin branch through my floral foam so that the wire wouldn’t cut right through, then tied the piece of foam onto the form using the wire.Living Floral Wreath via Ashlea of This Mamas Dance

I did this in two spots around the wreath, then started placing flowers. Remember this is wet floral foam so it will keep the flowers from drying out. Living Floral Wreath via Ashlea of This Mamas Dance

lambs ear, lilac, snowball, iris, columbine, allium, hosta… and a few other stems I can’t recall

I just love the way it came together. It’s soft and whimsical… It reminds me of a giant flower crown, which I want to learn to make.

Can you tell that I mostly plant white and purples in my garden?  I always seem to notice it most when I cut flowers for arrangements.

Aren’t flowers the best? Boy was this a fun little project. Speaking of boy(s)-My boys loved watching me put this together- especially my youngest. He really enjoys arranging flowers, and has a good eye for it.

I’ll be sure to update you on how this lasts, though I imagine it won’t last long. I plan to place it in water at night if the stems are looking really sad.

Happy Creating,

-Miss Ash

  1. Your wreath is simply beautiful! How long did it last? I think if you misted it it probably would last a little be longer. Your porch looks very inviting and comfy.
