Cottage Entryway Progress: It Gets Worse Before it Gets Better

We have made steady progress on our Cottage Entryway Project. To give you a quick reminder- we added a small mudroom onto the existing entrance to our house- and what used to be the back entryway to our small home, became the hallway that joins the old house with the addition. Because my computer crashed, and I am a bit remote- I don’t have a really great before/progress shot of this space. Probably because I avoided photographing the chaos! ha.

We left off with widening the doorway from the mud room. You can read all about that here. Next up we needed to relocate some switches and a junction box. We also had to remove the shiplap on the upper portion of the wall. cottage entryway progress | via Ashlea of This Mamas Dance

See what I mean about things getting worse before they get better? I must admit I don’t love construction- but I do love that the mess means work is happening!

We planked the hallway ceiling in pine, and I am still undecided about whitewashing, staining or painting it white… The mudroom is just primed at this point, and needs a finish coat of white paint.cottage entryway progress | via Ashlea of This Mamas Dancecottage entryway progress | via Ashlea of This Mamas Dance

I can not tell you how happy that drywall makes me!! I am thinking of doing a fun pop of color or perhaps some wall paper there. I will also be adding trim on the joints, base board, an alternate plate for the junction box (the wall used to be the location of the old panel, so considering all we were left with was that box- I am pretty thrilled!) and chunky trim between the drywall and shiplap. I will be putting hooks along that wall for coats and bags. Lots of them!

I also decided to stain the small wall of shiplap. I used a mix of minwax driftwood, and danish oil in dark walnut. I love how it brought out the delicious texture of the wood- though it was tricky to photograph with the light streaming in. I’m keeping my eye out for a pretty mirror to go here for that last minute check before running out the door.cottage entryway progress | via Ashlea of This Mamas Dance

You can see the shiplap prior to staining just to the left in the photo above. Everything else in the mudroom and hall is white, but I really wanted to keep some of that beautiful old wood. I didn’t grab a great shot of the hallway before, but this picture gives you a good idea. We are looking into the kitchen which is the old part of the house, and behind me (taking the photo) is our living room.cottage entryway progress | via Ashlea of This Mamas Dance

If you follow me on instagram then you have caught a glimpse of how this space is looking now. Because this post is getting quite lengthy I am going to update you on the laundry room closet- which is behind that set of curtains… tomorrow! For now here is a look at my plan for casing this opening going into the kitchen.

I love the texture of that reclaimed wood!! I found this on Pinterest and could not find the original source- so if anyone knows please share it and I will link it up.

What do you think?
