DIY Chevron Wood Wall and Episode 4

Matt and I were visting one of our favorite places- Canmore- when we went into one of our favorite shops and saw a beautiful dark, wood, feature wall. I tucked that pretty piece of inspiration away- and pulled it out for this DIY Chevron Wood Wall.

I I shared all about our progress and this impactful DIY project on the latest episode of Building Maker House.

I wanted to share a full tutorial for those that would be interested in duplicating this project. It was quite quick to install, and would look lovely in any type of stain. Here’s what you need to get started:
Supplies

  • 1×6 pine boards
  • PL 300 construction adhesive
  • Brad Nails
  • Pneumatic Nail Gun
  • Chop Saw
  • Level
  • Stain (I used “Ebony”)

We started with 1×6 pine boards. And cut them on a 45 degree angle on each end.

Before Installing the first board, we chalked a level line down the centre of the wall.

We then lined up two pieces point to point on the level line. We used PL 300 construction adhesive and brad nails to install each board.

I’m really glad my husband is good at math because all of those finishing angles made me feel a little confused. I can figure it out if I have to- but I kind of hate measuring and cutting around things. It’s like hopping on the stair climber for my brain. I’d much rather take a dance class.

Whenever I am writing about these projects I wonder… when am I not on a time crunch?! Haha. But, because we were on a time crunch, once we got to the slow point of installing all the small cuts- I started staining. You could pre-stain these, but we decided to stain them once they were up. It wasn’t a huge area, and it actually took me very little time.

I actually liked the look of the pine on it’s own, and truth be told it could be finished half a dozen ways and still look lovely. I waffled, but decided to stick with my original inspiration. I went with a dark Ebony stain… nearly black, but not quite.

It’s still drying in the photo above but it is quite the conversation piece! This will be the most stylish board room on the block! At least I like to think so…

While this room is on the same side as the Loft, we chose to install laminate flooring with a reclaimed wood look. It’s the same flooring we installed in the Studio which you can catch a look at in the walkthrough of the whole space. You’ll also catch the 2 vertical trim pieces and baseboard we added onto the wall. I didn’t manage to grab a shot of that.

If you have any questions about this project, please feel free to leave them in the comments. I think this would look really neat in a bedroom or dining room… it’s definitely not cottagey or farmhouse style… but it fits in with the modern industrial vibe of this makeover!

    1. Hi Eunice- we created a layout that worked for the size of the wall. So we centred the design on the walll, and then measured out a pattern that would work for the space, so that it was nice and even on both sides. I would suggest doing that for your wall- which will affect the length of the pieces. We started with 6 ft boards, and I think we cut off a foot or so… hope that helps!

  1. We want to use reclaimed oak flooring, each plank is 3/4″, to make a chevron accent wall in the kitchen. It will be 1 1/2 walls that form a corner. If we have enough wood we will be doing both walls. Should we cut the planks thinner or leave the thickness alone? Also how do you fit each piece around outlets & phone jacks? If you would like to see a picture of the area I can email it to you so you can see what I’m talking about when I say 1 & 1/2 walls. The half wall has a wide 2 door cabinet above a desk. We will do the wood between the cabinet & the desk top then the wall underneath the desk.
Thank you for your help!!!! In am VERY EXCITED to be having this wood accent wall done!!

    1. The width of the boards would really just depend on personal preference, and what look you like best! We purchased a width we liked the look of so it didn’t have to be cut down. We used a jigsaw to cut out for the outlets. Good luck! I am sure it will come together beautifully.
