Our Cottage Style Family Bath

I had so much fun choosing the finishes for this bathroom. There are of course details to be finished {my catchphrase} but things are relatively in the home stretch! I wanted to really give this room a feminine cottage feel while still allowing it to be suitable for the 3 men of the house!

bath 5I am so glad we found this vanity, because we needed a bit of an odd size to carry out our plan. It took me a while to find something pre-built, in white… Matt found this at Rona one day, and we even got it on sale {double yes!} At first I was worried the marble top would be too busy, but I love it. The storage is functional, and it has soft close doors and drawers. I love that it looks more like a piece of furniture and less like a traditional cabinet with a kick. My one qualm is the hardware. I am not a fan, and was sad that the holes were all pre-drilled when we opened the box. I had planned on doing pulls on the drawers, and am still brain storming how to make that work, but I think as time allows I will change out the hardware to make it a little more “me.”

Some have inquired about why we didn’t do double sinks, and to be honest we just didn’t feel like we needed it. We have 2 other sinks in the house. Plus, double sinks means less counter space and more cost in the way of rough ins/faucets/fixtures 😉 It was something that we didn’t feel would be utilized enough to warrant putting it in.

We plan to eventually add vertical storage for towels and linens to the right of  the vanity {where the laundry basket is. The mirror we have had for 3 years or so, and I think we originally found it at home depot. It works well for now 🙂

bathroom 6I love this floor tile! It is called “Octagon and Dot” and it is simply sweet. We paired it with the same grey grout that we did in the shower. It comes in sheets- like many styles of mosaic, and is relatively forgiving as far as install is concerned. {yes we have been asked if we put it in piece by piece!} My girlfriend has the same tile in her bathroom but with white grout. And a gorgeous claw foot tub… double swoon. I might just need to do a guest post of her space one day! 😉

I went with chrome fixtures for the faucets/taps etc. Neither of the lights are chrome but it works. I might even go with black hardware for the cabinet… I’m not sure yet. I just love the way our black matte door knobs look against the white doors.

bath 7I am so happy with how the ceiling turned out! It is a “pickling” gel stain… it’s oil based and it was SO fumey- so I really recommend opening lots of windows! I applied it in the summer, before we were into the addition.

The window sill was re-claimed from an old window from the original part of the house. I think I will paint it out… at least that is the plan!

I am enjoying the wide horizontal stripes. I think that shower curtains are a relatively in-expensive way to give a room a new feel or fresh pop of color. I had purchased a white and yellow curtain from Target, but it did a weird hombre effect to a mustard color. My mom had found this shower curtain{not sure where?}and while it is hard to tell here it is more of a tan/burlap color with cream.

We get so many positive comments about that pendant light- it’s IKEA friends.

bath 3Our taps are Moen, and are from the “Asheville” collection. I will be honest, after showering in our old corner shower with peeling sillicone and hard water rust marks, this tub and shower feel pretty luxurious! I am SO thankful to have a bath tub again.

bath 8I love the old charm of these taps. If only my husband knew how much I deliberated over each and every choice… he thinks he knows, but he probably only knows about 40% of it… haha. For some reason these taps just pull it all together for me.

I am sure as time goes on we will see this little room evolve. I need to hang some hooks for towels, and add some sort of artwork into the room as well as window coverings {I usually have a square of plywood sitting in front of the lower portion of the window… classy!} I can’t wait to infuse a little more “life” into this room. Since these photos were taken I moved the little tree out {yes we have 2!} and plopped some fresh tulips into a thrifted ironstone pitcher. It makes my heart yearn for the first blossoms of spring, but we are a long way off from that, so this will have to do!

{I am pretty active on instagram, so you can always find me there in between posts}

We’ve never had a “private” bathroom. This one is still not a full en-suite,  but it has a second entrance via a pocket door into our bedroom. So it’s a bit of a cheater en suite, while still being accessible for the kids and guests! We went from one bathroom to 3, and I love everything about that except the extra toilets to clean 😉 I think it’s time I train some boys to take over that responsibility.

We have had a pretty busy week, so it feels nice to sit at the computer in the quiet with a hot cup of tea and decompress. Thank you so much for stopping in! Do say hello!
